Finzean Bucket Mill Community Interest Company has been founded to repair, maintain and operate the historic Grade-A Listed water powered sawmill, which specialises in the production of wooden buckets, which can be found in near Finzean in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The Bucket Mill has a rich history. Built in 1853 on a site of a previous water powered sawmill, it was operated by the Brown family for three generations. It was built to produce turned wooden buckets, of a style which is now completely unique to the mill. By the late 1970s the mill was derelict, but was saved by Stan Moyes, who led the restoration efforts in the 1980s and operated the mill throughout the 1990s and 2000s, cementing the mill as a local landmark.

The Finzean Bucket Mill CIC is the next custodian of the mill, which is owned by the Birse Community Trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Community Interest Company?

A Community Interest Company or CIC is a business structure similar to a Limited Company (Ltd), but with some important differences. Firstly, it is a not-for-profit. Whilst the company needs to be profitable to achieve the aims, it means that there are no dividends to be paid out, profits made are reinvested. If the company is wound up, assets go to a nominated charity, which for this CIC, is the Birse Community Trust.

What are the goals of the Finzean Bucket Mill CIC?

  • Repair, Maintain and Operate Finzean Bucket Mill
  • Make the mill machinery compliant with safety regulations
  • Develop a model rural craft business
  • Work with local landowners to harvest locally sourced timber
  • Restart the production of wooden buckets
  • Support traditional skills education and training

Who is behind the CIC?

The CIC is being developed by Owen Bushell, a traditional craftsman based near Lumphanan, who runs his own small traditional crafts business, RG Bushell. The Finzean Bucket Mill is owned by the Birse Community Trust and is leased to the Finzean Bucket Mill CIC.

There is an ongoing process, supported by the Heritage Crafts Assosication Endangered Crafts Fund to work with the current miller, Stan Moyes, and the Birse Community Trust to pass on the unique and endangered craft of wooden bucket making and the unique set of millwrighting skills required to maintain and operate the mill to the next generation.
